Susan Inman of the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society provides a thoughtful commentary about the word "recovery" as it is applied to the family of a person with a mental disorder. • Do you know other people whose families have struggled with addiction issues, or does it feel as if yours is the only one? Our members find that talking confidentially with peers can help a parent be and feel stronger, both by accepting support and giving it.

From Grief to Action as an organization does not lead its own support groups. Its original members have benefited from the skills and tools of the Parents Forever program. The program co-ordinator at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver, developers and managers of the program, describes here how it works.

  • Two new resources are now available to assist women with addictions and community groups that serve them in making decisions about participating in research. The guides summarize findings from a CIHR-funded study led by Dr. Amy Salmon that examined how to better support the active and meaningful participation of women with substance use problems in health research.

The guide addressed to individuals and their families is called Your Rights in Research: A Guide for Women.

A further guide answers the questions organizations may have: When Researchers Come Calling: A Guide for Organisations that Work with Women.

Often seen as a "vulnerable population" in research and clinical settings, substance-using women also have rights to be included in respectful research that reflects their interests and priorities. These two guides address both concerns, highlighting issues regarding informed consent, participant recruitment and retention strategies, the provision of honoraria or incentives, confidentiality, and reporting of research results.

The guides were prepared by researchers from the Women's Health Research Institute's Mental Health and Addictions Unit, the BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health, UBC, and the University of Victoria,

For more information about these guides or this study, please contact: Dr. Amy Salmon at: asalmon@cw.bc.ca or (604)875-2424 ext. 4880.
