Our Mission
From Grief to Action is a volunteer-based not-for-profit association in British Columbia. We are a voice and a support network for families and friends affected by drug use.
Purposes of the Society
- To promote recognition of drug use as a health issue.
- To raise public awareness of the needs and concerns of drug users and their families, and work towards overcoming stereotypes and marginalization.
- To provide and promote support for families and friends of drug users.
- To promote effective educational programs designed to prevent drug abuse and uphold abstinence as an ideal.
- To promote and work towards the establishment of a comprehensive continuum of care for drug users which meets their needs for harm reduction, detoxification, treatment, and recovery, in order that they may achieve and maintain healthy, productive lives.
Our current and ongoing initiatives include:
- Regular meetings of support groups, including Parents in Action and Parents Forever
- Providing resource information about drugs, treatment and help available to parents and families who are affected by drug use
- Working with other groups to open new treatment centres
- Working with School Board trustees and professionals on education and prevention
- Raising awareness before various levels of government of the need for detoxification facilities and treatment on demand
- Working to raise awareness in the general public that drug addiction is a disease and not a choice.
Supportive gifts take many forms. For example, supermarket bakeries and others have donated refreshments to our annual general meeting, and in 2006, then-fledgling 604media generously contributed a third of the hours it had dedicated to redeveloping our website.
